Career Summary

After receiving his master’s degree in 1983, Mr. Handley began his career as an exploration geologist with Sohio Petroleum Company, working in the Appalachians and later in Oklahoma.  After a short stint as an independent geologist, he joined Conoco, Inc. as an Operations Geologist in international exploration.  Mr. Handley switched career paths after a 1993 restructuring at Conoco and took training in the environmental field at the Institute for Environmental Technology.  As an environmental consultant, he was involved in a wide variety of projects which included asbestos and lead surveys, Phase I and Phase 2 site investigations, regulatory compliance support, health and safety, and remedial actions.  He reestablished his independent practice after leaving corporate consulting in 2021.  Since that time, his main projects have involved oil and gas waste disposal issues.

Chronological Professional Experience

2021-Present: Independent Consulting Geologist, Houston, Texas. Mr. Handley has continued to support clients involved in oil and gas related issues, including brine contamination at a commercial disposal facility. He continues to support projects generated by EnviroPhase, Inc., Symb Environmental, and International Mining and Minerals (I2M Consulting, LLC, and I2M Corporation.

2014-2021: EnviroPhase, Inc., Professional Geologist, Houston, Texas. Mr. Handley was responsible for operations at the Houston Field Office, where he provided consulting services in support of Phase I and Phase 2 site investigations, asbestos surveys, and remedial actions.  Since 2014, he has been engaged with Symb Environmental in the remediation of a brine plume associated with a release at a commercial oil and gas disposal facility.

2005-2014: Independent Environmental Geologist, Houston, Texas.  Mr. Handley was involved in general support for a variety of environmental projects but was also supporting companies engaged in identifying areas and formations with potential for saltwater disposal and in the identification of additional storage zones in existing disposal wells.

2004-2005:  The Benham Companies, Staff Geologist, Houston, Texas.  Mr. Handley provided environmental consulting services and participated in several projects, including the installation of an industrial water supply well for a commercial aggregate mine.

2003-2004: Independent Environmental Consultant, Houston, Texas.  Mr. Handley provided environmental consulting services for companies including Quantum Environmental and International Mining and Minerals (I2M).  His relationship with I2M has continued to the present.

2002-2003:  Conestoga Rovers and Associates, Project Geologist, Houston Texas. Provided support for regulatory compliance projects. 

2001-2002: Risk Assessment and Management Inc. (the RAM Group), Project Geologist, Houston, Texas. Provided regulatory compliance support.

1996-2001: Compliance Solutions, Inc. (CSI); Project Geologist.  Mr. Handley supported clients engaged in toxic tort cases while working with a medical  pathologist as well as regulatory compliance support.   

1993-1996: Maxim Technologies, Project Geologist, Houston, Texas.  This company supplied clients with Phase I and Phase II consulting support.

1986-1993: Conoco, Inc., Staff Geologist, Houston, Texas.  Mr. Handley provided support for international wellsite operations in Ecuador, Angola, and Papua, New Guinea.

1985-1986: Independent Consulting Geologist, Denver, Colorado. Engaged in the identification of suitable employment during an industry downturn.

1983-1985: Sohio Petroleum Company, Staff Geologist, Dallas, Texas.  Exploration geologist exploring for structural traps in the Appalachians and stratigraphic traps in northern Oklahoma.  Mr. Handley also provided wellsite operations support shortly before the British Petroleum takeover.

Mr. Handley is a member of the AIPG, the Association of Independent Professional Geologists, the Houston Geological Society, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (EMD), and the Texas Association of Environmental Professionals.  As a member of the Energy Minerals Division of AAPG, Mr. Handley served a two-year term as Secretary of the Division. During this time period, he was a co-author of Chapter 9 in AAPG-EMD Memoir 101 entitled: Energy Resources for Human Settlement in the Solar System and Earth’s Future in Space (more). He is also a member of the Board of the AIPG Texas Section.

Mr. Handley was engaged in oil and gas exploration from 1983 to 1993, working with Sohio Petroleum Company as an exploration geologist and with Conoco as an operations geologist and play analysis specialist.  He departed oil and gas activities in 1993 and cross-trained into the environmental consulting field via the IET program, where he graduated as #2 in the class of 95 student. He has since worked in subsurface characterization, regulatory and wetlands compliance, and underground injection.

In 2005, he formed Handley Consulting and provided environmental consulting services as an independent until 2013, when he joined EnviroPhase, Inc. and returned to private practice supporting I2M Consulting, LLC environmental and mining-related projects.  He has been involved in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, remedial actions at contaminated sites, and geologic interpretation for subsurface injection and other projects involving litigation.
