The Announcement of the Creation of The I2M Institute of Energy & Critical Resources

I2M Management and I2M Associates announced today that the I2M Group and contributors have come together to create The I2M Institute of Energy & Critical Resources.

MISSION:

To conduct formal and informal discussions and independent evaluations via virtual meetings on issues relating to:

  1. Energy resources, their availability and selection for the generation of electricity and impact on the environment, and
  2. Critical resources, their availability, use, cost to produce, and the geopolitical framework in the supply chain.

OBJECTIVES:

Institute members & contributors will collaborate on topical evaluations, publications, and reports to formalize findings & recommendations via Zoom panel meetings and will be available to industry, government, and news media for consultation on subjects that one or more members of the Institute may have expertise / experience, such as in energy-selection policy, uranium exploration, nuclear power, nuclear waste, critical resources, especially rare earth elements, etc., mining, associated environmental aspects of these areas, and in many subfields of geology, i.e., geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, etc.

FACILITATION OF SUPPORTING INFORATION:

To maintain and continue to expand the I2M Web Portal database, containing as of October 27, 2021: 11,315 records, focused on papers, reports and technical news items relating to the Mission and Objectives of the Institute, some of which have been reviewed by applying a modified version of the protocol developed by Campbell, et al., (2018).

I2M’s Chief Geologist Steps Down as Chair of the Energy Minerals Division’s Uranium (Nuclear & Rare Earth) Committee after 17 Years

Michael D. Campbell, I2M’s Chief Geologist advised members of the Energy Minerals Division of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) that after 17 years as the Chairman of the Uranium (Nuclear & Rare Earth) Committee (UCOM), it is time to step down effective July 1, 2021 to allow other geologists to experience the developing new growth in nuclear power and the coming resurgence of uranium exploration that is now clearly on the horizon. The timing is good for such a move because he indicated that he has been getting offers to consider joining corporate boards of some uranium companies over the past few months. When, and if, he accepted such a position it would make his leadership position in the Uranium Committee difficult, if not untenable. He also indicated that he has been discussing the likelihood of such a move with his Vice-Chairs and his Advisory Group for some time so his move now should not be a surprise to them.

In his announcement to EMD and AAPG, he also indicated that during the transition he would be pleased to assist the incoming Chairperson and Vice-Chairs in making the uranium, nuclear power and rare earth databases of the I2M Web Portal available for their use in monitoring the activities in industry, universities, and in government. I2M’s Chief Geologist Presents the 2021 Annual Report to EMD Zoom Conference

Michael D. Campbell, P.G., P.H., I2M’s Chief Geologist, and Chairman of the AAPG’s Energy Minerals Division’s Uranium (Nuclear & Rare Earth) Committee presented the summary annual report during the EMD Zoom Conference on June 10, 2021 (here). The full report will be listed on the EMD UCOM website soon (here). He emphasized that the new SMR designs are gaining traction in new nuclear power construction in the US ( such as in Idaho and Wyoming) and in the UK, China, etc. (more).

NuScale personnel produced a report in early 2021 to extoll the virtues of their new technology. They indicated that over the past century, the power generator fleet in the U.S. has gone through many changes. New technologies, state and federal environmental regulations, and changing operating costs have all contributed to an increasingly diverse energy generation landscape. The early industrial successes of the world are credited to the affordability and abundance of electricity, particularly from coal-fired power plants. Historically, large-scale coal power plants in the U.S. offered a cost-effective power solution that satisfied growing energy demand, due to the wide availability of coal as fuel and the relative ease to which it could be delivered to a plant site.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), over the last decade, the United States has led the world with […]

New Mentions of I2M’s Chief Geologist in AAPG’s The Explorer

“What happens to energy demand and emissions in 2021 and beyond will depend on how much emphasis governments put on clean energy transitions in their efforts to boost their economies in the coming months,” the agency stated in a March 2 report titled, “Global Energy Review: Global Emissions in 2020.”In an effort to turn the emissions curve downward more quickly, President Joe Biden announced at the April 22 Leaders Summit on Climate that the United States should aim to cut 2005 level emissions (which peaked at just under 6 billion tons of carbon dioxide) by half […]

Mini-Webinar on I2M Web Portal

This Mini-Webinar explains the purpose, the function, and how to use the I2M Web Portal. It now contains a database of more than 10,500 records consisting of: enhanced hyperlinks in abstracts, comments and hyperlinks to industry and government reports, technical papers, and technical news releases, all involving geoscience topics selected by the I2M management team, and now made available to the geoscience community in industry, university, and government. Members of the general public might also find the I2M Web Portal contents of interest.

The I2M Web Portal reflects our client-research activities over the years and our research in support of the AAPG Energy Minerals Division’s Uranium (Nuclear & REE) Committee.

We now begin many of our projects by search-checking the Web Portal for what information is available in the Portal even before we check Google. The I2M Web Portal is uploaded weekly with new reports, technical papers, technical news items, which are summitted for review by the I2M editors that meet focused criteria in some 30 categories. These range in topical coverage from astrogeology (yes, even on UFOs) to uranium with an overall emphasis on matters related to offworld (Moon, Mars, Venus, etc.), energy resources (O&G, coal, nuclear power, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and other renewables), climate change (issues, data, reports, politics, etc.), critical minerals and […]

Beyond Hydrocarbons … The Rest of the Story.

The AAPG’s EMD’s Uranium (Nuclear & REE) Committee has just released an update to its annual report to the AAPG membership and to the general public. It will also be available one day on the AAPG website in Search & Discovery of their Data Pages publication in late 2021 (because of a Pandemic). In the meantime, the World Nuclear News has reported on the UCOM report (here).

Michael D. Campbell, I2M’s Chief Geologist and Chairman of UCOM said in a recent conference that serious competition is now underway to determine which energy source will dominate the power-grid of the foreseeable future. With coal declining rapidly, only natural gas, uranium (and nuclear power), hydroelectric power, and renewables (wind and solar) are in the running. Both natural gas and nuclear power are providing back-up to the power grid because of the inherent drawbacks of wind and solar, (where the former does not blow all the time and the latter is intermittent because there are cloudy days and the sun only shines during the day, of course). Because California has retired many of their nuclear power plants, natural gas has taken their place in the power grid in supporting California’s renewable energy systems and others around the U.S.

Inherent Failings of the Wind and Solar
Renewables’ inherent failings have been identified and this is made even more […]
